The Scottish Castles Association’s Spring Tour took place from 17–19 April 2026, with Andy and Jan Ritchie arranging a superb itinerary exploring the castles, towers and historic sites of the Anglo-Scottish border and the Debatable Lands.

The weekend included visits to Lochhouse Tower and Elshieshields Tower, followed by an extensive programme including Drumburgh Castle, Thistlewood Tower, Rose Castle, Lanercost Priory, Birdoswald Roman Fort, Thirlwall Castle, Scaleby Castle, Askerton Castle, Bewcastle, Stonegarthside Hall, Netherby Hall, Gilnockie Tower and Kirkandrews Tower.

A particular highlight was Brackenhill Tower, originally built by the notorious Border Reiver Richie Graham in the late sixteenth century, Brackenhill Tower is a unique Grade II* listed building, recognised as a rare example of a Scottish-style tower house surviving on English soil. The tower was rescued and extensively restored by Andy and Jan Ritchie after appearing on the BBC’s Restoration series, and provided a fitting conclusion to the weekend.

With numerous private properties opened especially for the Association, the tour offered members a rare opportunity to see some remarkable buildings and hear directly from their owners. The weekend was a great success, and a warm vote of thanks is due to Andy and Jan Ritchie for their meticulous planning and generous hospitality.
