Scotland’s Castles. Our Shared Heritage.

For everyone who loves Scotland’s castles.

The Scottish Castles Association, in partnership with the University of Stirling, is creating a permanent, freely accessible national Archive bringing together historic photographs, documents and research.

From magnificent strongholds to forgotten ruins, Scotland’s castles tell the story of our past. The Archive will record what survives, what is changing and what is at risk, creating an invaluable resource for research, education and conservation.

By identifying castles at risk and highlighting opportunities for restoration and reuse, the Archive will also help raise awareness, encourage community involvement and inspire action to give these historic buildings a sustainable future.

Join us at Dundas Castle for the launch of this important national project and discover how the Archive will bring Scotland’s castle heritage to a wider audience.

The event will include a drinks reception, a three-course dinner with wine and presentations on the Archive and its significance.

Dinner & Tickets >

We invite organisations to sponsor the fundraising dinner and support the development of the Archive. Sponsors will be recognised on the SCA website, with a prominent display for the principal sponsor and a dedicated section for supporting sponsors.

Help us build a national resource that connects people with Scotland’s castles and opens up new possibilities for their future.

Scotland’s Castles: Use Them or Lose Them

Developing a Practical Roadmap for Castle Owners

In October 2025, the Scottish Castles Association, with support from Historic Environment Scotland, held a national conference at The Engine Shed in Stirling. The conference brought together experts, castle owners and heritage professionals to explore how Scotland’s castles can be restored, reused and secured for future generations.

From Discussion to Action
The SCA is taking forward the conference findings to develop a practical online resource to help people navigate the challenges of owning, restoring and reusing a castle. The aim is to bring together existing guidance, expert advice and practical experience, helping people understand planning requirements, conservation, funding, potential uses and long-term sustainability.

Our goal is to make it easier for people to take on Scotland’s castles and give these important historic buildings a sustainable future.

Your support will help make the launch a success and introduce a wider audience to the Scottish Castles Archive.

“Castles are part of our cultural heritage, and in their ruins can be found very personal stories as well as high political drama. In bringing these buildings to life, we can find keys to understanding how and why our society developed as it has.”
