Our Awards

Nigel Tranter Memorial Award

Established to honour our late founding President, historian and writer Nigel Tranter, the award recognises outstanding contributions to Scotland’s castle heritage. Tranter was best known for his meticulously researched Scottish historical novels and his landmark five-volume series, The Fortified House in Scotland. He was generous to the many castle restorers who sought his advice, and the award recognises those who continue to build on his legacy.

Charles McKean Memorial Prize

Awarded in memory of leading architectural historian and former SCA President, Professor Charles McKean, the prize is open to students of architecture, architectural conservation and architectural history in Scotland. Professor McKean served as CEO of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) and Chairman of the UNESCO Edinburgh World Heritage Trust. He was passionate about saving Scotland’s castles, and our prize celebrates the conservation of castles and their contribution to local communities.
