Using examples from across Aberdeenshire\, Professor Richard Oram will explore how these castles were not only fortresses but also sophisticated residences that displayed wealth\, status\, European connections and family lineage. They were statements of confidence and prestige as much as places of defence. \nAbout the Speaker \nProfessor Richard Oram is President of the Scottish Castles Association and Professor of Medieval and Environmental History at the University of Stirling. He is one of Scotland’s foremost authorities on medieval history and castles\, with an extensive body of published work spanning Scottish lordship\, castle architecture and environmental history\, including the acclaimed three-volume An Environmental History of Scotland from the Romans to COP26.

SUMMARY:Our AGM and 30th Birthday Party at Lauriston Castle
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to our AGM and 30th Birthday Party on Sunday 21st June 2026 at Lauriston Castle\, Aberdeenshire\, by kind invitation of our Chair\, Dorothy Newlands of Lauriston\, and her husband William Newlands of Lauriston. \nRegistration for this event is now closed if you are interested in attending please contact enquiries@scotlandscastles.org. \n  \nLauriston Castle\, Aberdeenshire.\n  \nAbout Lauriston Castle: \nFirst mentioned in 1243 and captured by Edward III during the Wars of Independence\, Lauriston Castle was the home of Dorothy’s family\, the Stratons\, until 1690. Over the following century\, the policies were developed in fashionable Picturesque style – a designed landscape recorded as “of very high quality”. The castle was restored by William and Dorothy in the early Nineties with the help of architect Ian Begg\, a winner of our Nigel Tranter Memorial Award. \nAbout the day: \n\nOur AGM will be held from 11am -12.30pm. We will be sharing our plans for the future and we would love to hear your views. Afterwards we will enjoy a light lunch.\nFrom 2pm we will hold our 30th birthday party\, joined by some of our founding members. We’ll be cutting a cake and raising a glass in celebration.\nAfterwards\, on the way home\, you are welcome to join a short popup visit to Kirkside House\, St Cyrus\, by kind permission of SCA Member Julia Davies. For three centuries the fascinating Kirkside was home to a branch of the Straton family\, who built a tower house – the cellarage of which still exists – succeeded by two Georgian houses and a fine addition and remodelling by Lorimer early last century.\n\nThe day is open to members and their guests\, although only members will be able to attend the AGM. While the AGM is taking place\, guests can chat over coffee and explore the lovely gardens and policies at Lauriston. \nIf you are unable to attend the AGM please email enquiries@scotlandscastles.org to send your apologies. \nCloser to the time we will email the calling notice and details of the papers for the AGM to members. \nIf you have any queries or issues with booking\, please contact events@scotlandscastles.org. \n\nFind Lauriston Castle with what3words: ///topics.holly.saga\nFind Kirkside House with what3words: ///streamers.channel.cupboards\nRead our guide to using what3words
